Wexford Gifts4Fones Scheme launched in Castlebridge
Monday, 14 September, 2009
Community groups in Wexford from schools to sports clubs can collect free gifts and equipment by collecting old mobile phones following
the launch of a new gifts4fones.ie website in the county this week.
The Gifts4Fones initiative works by awarding points for recycled mobile phones. Phones without a camera are awarded one point and phones with
a camera are worth two points. These points can then be used to acquire products for the community, school or group.
Residents in Rectory Hall, Castlebridge, Co Wexford are one of the first groups to join the scheme. The group, which has scored consistently
well in the Wexford Co Council Environmental Awards for best kept housing estate, is collecting phones to help them generate free gardening
equipment.
Under the scheme Gifts4Fones will also donate a tree for planting in the area.
“This is a fantastic way for Wexford community and social groups to generate much needed resources for their cause as well as helping the
environment,” commented Mel McCarthy of Rectory Hall. “Everyone has old mobile phones lying around the house gathering dust. We plan to round
them up and trade them for valuable community resources.”
“The current economic climate means it is increasingly difficult for groups to generate funding or raise money,” commented Alan McCarthy from
Gifts4Fones. “Our recycling programme allows people to trade their old mobile phones for much needed supplies. The phones are environmentally
recycled and a further boost to the environment is our donation of trees to groups which collect enough phones.”
Wexford community groups schools or clubs interested in participating in the Gifts4Fones scheme should go online to www.gifts4fones.ie or
call 01 427 9797.
